Following in the footsteps of the lovely Tim Schafer — whose campaign just broke the $3 million barrier and ends today at 5pm PST — Brian Fargo of InXile Entertainment has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the direct sequel to one of the most widely reknowned PC games of all time.Waaaaaaay back in the late 80s, Wasteland was received with critical acclaim, and served as the inspiration for the Fallout series. Now, almost 25 years later, Fargo wants to bring much of the same team back on board to work on delivering a true sequel, and is asking for help from it’s incredibly still-loyal fanbase.

Among those being brought back for the ride are the original designers of Wasteland, Alan Pavlish and Mike Stackpole. Additionally, Fargo intends to bring back designer Ken St. Andre, and Mark Morgan, the musical genius behind Fallout 1 and 2.

“Supporting Wasteland 2 is nothing more radical than pre-ordering a game from your favorite brick-and-mortar store,” Fargo says. “We believe strongly enough in this project and in your desire to see it become a reality, that we decided to go ahead with this Kickstarter drive to fund it.”

The campaign is asking for $900,000 over the course of 35 days, and at the time of this writing, over $130,000 has already been contributed. Fargo doesn’t plan on stopping there, though.

“…we’re looking ahead to what we can do if you all back this project in force,” Fargo writes. “At $1.25 million, the money will go primarily into making the world bigger, adding more maps, more divergent stories and even more music.  At $1.5 million, the world gets even bigger. You’ll have more adventures to play, more challenges to deal with, and a greater level of complexity to the entire storyline.  We’ll add more environments, story elements, and characters to make the rich world come alive even more.  We will even be able to bring Wasteland 2 to OS X for Mac lovers. And after $1.5 million the sky is the limit.”

Some pretty neat-o rewards are available for those who wish to make a significant contribution to the project, including the possibility of being included as a NPC for donating $1,000 or more. If you ever had dreams of becoming a random innocent bystander obliterated in the wake of the hero’s destruction, now’s your chance!
