Next Gen Microsoft Console Ditching Discs
0Although unconfirmed by Microsoft, a recent report revealed that the next generation Microsoft machine will not include a disc drive. Developers were put under “the strictest non disclosure agreement” to protect the news… lol. Microsoft’s only comment regarded their quest to provide equipment that “[defies] the lifecycle convention”.
Other rumors reveal that the system will include some type of removable solid state media drive, likely as a substitute for the media drive. A release date has finally been confirmed for 2013, but their announcement of the system is still in limbo.
SNES Game to be Released in 2013
0Back in 1995, gaming company Super Fighter Team was getting ready to develop a title called, Nightmare Busters for the SNES. The game never came to fruition, and now, after roughly 15 years, the game will get a full release for the retro console.
All the necessary rights have been purchased, and the game will get a full release on a SNES cartridge, including a box and manual. It will be interesting to see how much the developers will be able to yank out of the system after 15 years of progressing technology. The game will be released in 2013.
Image of the Week: Saturday Evening Post Infinite
0If this were an actual Saturday Evening Post issue, I would be required to subscribe. This artsy spin gives the classic magazine a very neo feel. The BioShock series is known for having a futuristic/old timey feel, and this image fits the bill quite nicely. BioShock Infinite is currently in development and scheduled for release later this year. Artwork by Alex Garner.

Assassin’s Creed Franchise Comes to a Close in October… Maybe
0Bringing a close to the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Assassin’s Creed 3 has been given an official release date. Ubisoft has announced the title’s release on October 30th of this year. Fans can get ready for what Ubisoft is calling its “biggest launch in… history”.
Assassin’s Creed has maintained a release a year, and the main story line involving Desmond Miles comes to a close in October, but Ubisoft only plans on ending that story arc and slowing development (ie yearly releases) of the franchise. This shows that the developer still plans to create Assassin’s Creed titles in the future. One setting I would like to play the game in is industrial Britain ~1750–Oliver Twist gets revenge!
Naughty Dog Setting a Higher Standard of Storytelling for The Last of Us
0Director and writer of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Neil Druckmann recently spoke to Eurogamer about his vision for the upcoming game. Druckmann emphasized the industry’s need to raise the standard for storytelling. He stated,
As critics we need to raise the bar, otherwise no-one’s going to change. We’re going to keep pushing ourselves, and kill ourselves to make this story happen – but hope that by doing it, the rest of the industry is going to take notice and try to do the same thing.
This is great news for the gaming industry as story usually takes a backseat to gameplay, and any genre of media needs these boosts to improve. He also stated that he felt core gamers might not respond well to the premise of The Last of Us, being “a love story about a father-daughter-like relationship.” But it may turn out to be a risk that launches gaming to a new level.
