I’m tired of hearing that Final Fantasy VIII was not a standout title in one of the greatest franchises known to gaming. Gamers have offered their opinions as to why VIII sucked, so I thought I would offer my honest opinion of why Final Fantasy is my number 1 game of all time, as well as refuting the claims of its suckiness.
Why People Didn’t Like It
Final Fantasy VIII introduced a new style of gameplay that is unconventional to the franchise. Magic is not gained as the player progresses, rather it can be drawn from various enemies and drawpoints. That magic is then junctioned with each character’s stats such as strength, magic, status attacks, elemental attacks, and other defenses to name very few. In order to get these stats to high levels, the game requires exhausting amounts of fighting and drawing; it gets old fast. Beside that, gamers were unhappy with the mechanics of the gameplay in general, being so unconventional and unfamiliar to the rest of the series.
After satisfying audiences with a fulfilling experience from a book, film or game, publishers are keen to cash in on the hype of the first by rushing out a sequel. In the case of books and films, this is usually a very bad idea (with exception to Darth Bane: Rule of Two, Empire Strikes Back, Toy Story 2, Godfather 2, etc.).
Those who have ever stepped foot in a convenience store know that the colorful name brand products are always more appealing. The same also applies to the gaming industry. I wanted to pick one as an example, but I couldn’t decide between My Australian Farm, or Jerry Rice & Nitus Dog Football.
Some of these logos might bring better business if they made the upgrade. Shell’s gas is usually overpriced, but if I knew there was a shiny red tortoise carapace for me to hop on when I got there, I’d be on that like Mario in a Tanooki suit. I love google, but if I had a cuddly koala to lead the way on my internet adventures, I’d be as happy as a chocobo with ghysal roots.Have an image you want to be featured on GameTaffy? Every day as I scrub my toosh in the shower, I’m greeted with the sinister stare of a marble Pippy-the-hare-doppelganger. The random swirls may not look like much, but every time I don my shower cap, this is what I see: (more…)
