Although unconfirmed by Microsoft, a recent report revealed that the next generation Microsoft machine will not include a disc drive. Developers were put under “the strictest non disclosure agreement” to protect the news… lol. Microsoft’s only comment regarded their quest to provide equipment that “[defies] the lifecycle convention”.
Other rumors reveal that the system will include some type of removable solid state media drive, likely as a substitute for the media drive. A release date has finally been confirmed for 2013, but their announcement of the system is still in limbo.
At a recent BAFTA event, developers discussed the retail gaming market, including their predictions for its future. According to Jagex CEO, Mark Gerhard, it’ll be kaput within the next 10 years. Ideas have already been implemented to counteract the problem with retailers such as the online pass and DLC, but these developers are still convinced that retailers will soon be out of the picture with the growth of cloud based services and digital downloads.The developers also discussed the existing problems with the retail market, such as the fact that retailers are already taking business away from developers and publishers.
Digital is the wave of the future, but does this mean that retailers like GameStop will die? Frontier Development’s David Braben stated, ”Whilst I am tremendously sympathetic to all of those that work in the shops, the fundamental problem is that they’ve got to look at their business to reposition it anyway. That’s irrespective of whether it’s a good or bad thing.” Although these retailers will more than likely need to make changes, I don’t think retail in this sense will die. They will adapt and make the changes they need to in order to survive.
