New Video Games for August 14 – Sleeping Dogs & Darksiders II
Square Enix/United Front Games
Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3
United Front Games almost lost their chance to finish this game when the original publisher cancelled [ORIGINAL TITLE]. Fortunately, Square Enix purchased the game and bolstered the development team with some new staff members.
Soon, gamers started to see screens and trailers from the upcoming Sleeping Dogs, an open-world game inspired by old Hollywood and Asian action films.
Players control the undercover officer Wei Shen as he infiltrates the Hong Kong Triads. Players use a combination of melee & shooting to protect the people without blowing Wei’s cover.
Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 & PC
War’s brother Death takes the lead in this sequel as he tries to discover who framed War into starting the Apocalypse. While this game is a sequel, the story runs parallel to the events of the original, and Darksiders II brings players to a far larger world.
Most exciting of all, Darksiders II adds a role-playing mechanic. Players will find new items and armor by defeating stages and will decide what to keep and what to drop before moving on.
The original game was a hit, but it received little critical praise. Darksiders II hopes to improve on every aspect of the original by offering a bigger and better experience.
The Nintendo DS collections bring all of the Cooking Mama handheld games together on two cartridges (sold separately).
Papa & Yo
Quico and his giant beastly friend Monster solve puzzles and become closer. Unfortunately, Monster has an addiction to poisonous frogs. When he eats one, he flies into a rage, endangering everyone, including the player-controlled Quico. Monster’s subtle moods are crucial to solving puzzles and getting safely through the world.
The Last Story
Xseed Games/Mistwalker & AQ Interactive
Zael and his band of mercenaries are drawn into political affairs as two ancient races battle. This Japanese import brings single-player and online cooperative and competitive play, with an emphasis on dungeon crawling and tactics.
Kalypso Media/Novacore Studios
After playing Endless Space, I was introduced to the 4X genre. Now, Kalypso Media’s newest entry to 4X gaming brings 3 playable races and over 40 hours of campaign play with Legends of Pegasus.
In the future, humans expand into space and encounter two other imperialistic races. Players must us all four X’s (expand, exploit, explore, exterminate) to survive and thrive.
Legends of Pegasus combines turn-based strategy with 3D real-time strategy. During a turn, players can explore the galaxy and set up technologies, but during battles, players must play a more active role by selecting specific actions during battles.
