Fresh on the heels of Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead, Activision and Terminal Reality revealed their own video-game interpretation of the license with The Walking Dead, based on the award-winning television series, The Walking Dead, which draws its inspiration from the innovative comic book, The Walking Dead.

Admittedly, the Telltale Games interpretation sticks closer to the comic roots than to the television series. However, one may scratch his head, trying to dissect the subtle differences in the intellectual property that could warrant two radically different video games.

Terminal Reality’s interpretation takes players into the role of survivor Daryl Dixon, controlling the character through a first-person perspective as he does whatever he must to survive with the use of his crossbow.

Much like, say, Zombieland, Daryl and his brother Merle seek the supposed safety of Atlanta, since clearly in a zombie apocalypse, one major metropolitan city will remain untouched.

As players move through the environment, zombie threats will offer a real challenge, as the zombies are hardly mindless. Zombies will hunt and attack the players much like the television series.

“The work AMC has done with the TV series has been amazing and we’re ecstatic at the opportunity to be brought into the fold,” said Drew Haworth, Creative Director at Terminal Reality.  ”The studio is made up of fans of the show, and we think other fans will see that the situations and walkers featured in our game are every bit as gruesome and shocking as they are in the TV series — they look, move and react as expected with full authenticity — and they will surprise you.  The player’s fight-or-flight survival instinct is constantly engaged.  ‘Flight’ is usually a good bet.”

Players cannot run and gun through this game, as one zombie’s attention can turn into an unmanageable horde of undead attackers. Daryl must plan every move and observe every location to assess the threat and determine the best route to continue.

“Activision and Terminal Reality are working to deliver a powerful combination of a deep, engrossing story with intense action,” said Charlie Collier, AMC’s president.  ”Daryl is such a unique and complex character and we’re excited to offer fans the opportunity to experience this new video game.”

Players will enjoy the strategy in zombie combat and resource management with this interpretation, offering more intellectual challenge. But zombies aren’t the only threat, as encounters with human characters will offer new help or challenges to the game.

The Walking Dead will creep onto the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in 2013.
